BASH Ghost Walks around Brigg

Brigg Ghost Walks take place in the evenings of the darker months of the year and you will be led around the historic centre of the old market town of Brigg. A knowledgable guide will take you to the locations of the better known and some lesser known sightings of ghosts in the town.

The walks for the 2007/2008 season will start again on Halloween leaving from the Yarborough Hunt. For dates see the diary page. Tickets will be available, in advance, from the Tourist Information Centre, The Buttercross, Brigg.

Brigg Amateur Social Historians (BASH) held their last Ghost Walk of the winter season on Sunday January 28th.

It was well attended, starting and finishing at the Black Bull in Wrawby Street. The guides told of many hauntings including “The mysterious man wearing a black hat and cloak, who is said to haunt the old Congregational Chapel in Wrawby Street” and the ghostly sounds of horses in Queen Street, believed to be from the old Sutton Bean Brewery.

Sunday, 29th January, 2006. "The history and ghostly tales of Bridge Street"

Fifty people attended the latest Ghost Walk. There were three separate walks, each setting off from "The Yarborough Hunt" pub. The photograph shows Josie Webb's group in James Street near where a sighting of a young girl in Victorian dress is siad to haunt!

Our latest ghost walks took place on Sunday 30th January. 104 people set off from the White Horse in 5 groups on a crisp, cold night. The only ghostly figure which was actually spotted was the one which emerged from the Indian Restaurant, which looked very much like a waiter with a sheet over his head! The feedback indicated that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the walks, and the evening was rounded off by a free disco and hog roast which was held at the White Horse to mark the final evening of Darren and Jules in the pub. The next ghost walks will be held at the end of October. Tickets will be on sale nearer the date.

The figure of a man dressed in black and wearing a black bowler hat made the hairs on the back of our necks stand on end as we walked along Bigby Street on a fine, slightly misty night - an eerie start to the BASH Hallow'een Ghost Walk!

However, the figure turned out to be local man Nigel Fisher of the Evening Telegraph accompanied by a number of people connected with BASH, including Sandra who was to be our guide for the evening. The entrance to the Exchange had been suitably decorated which added to the spooky feel of the occasion.

Sandra directed us back down Bigby Street, through the Market Place and along some of the many back alleyways running of Wrawby Street and finally back to the Exchange

Sandra was extremely knowledgeable on the history of Brigg and pointed out many local buildings and told us stories of various ghostly goings on in the town, One or two people in the group had their own stories to tell also

While on our travels we came across the Nelson Hotel's black cat who had been missing for some time but decided to reappear on Hallow'een - very appropriate!

Our thanks go to B.A.S.H for organising a very successful and well attended evening - we look forward to another one next year

S.D.
