Tuesday 2nd of May - "The history of the Brigg Music & Drama Festival"
Maureen Settle gave an excellent talk on the history of the Brigg Music and
Drama Festival. She began with its fascinating beginnings from an idea of the
Elwes family, its involvement with Joseph Taylor, Percy Grainger and the song
"Brigg Fair", to the present day.
She convinced us that we have a festival worthy of praise and we should
give it our full support right into the next century

Tuesday 18th of April - "Titanic - a tale of two journeys"
This was the first of BASH's "exclusives" with Rob Goldsmith, a lecturer at
the West Sussex University, giving a talk on his dive to the wreck of the Titanic
which took place on July 12th 2005.
He won a trip to the wreck by entering a competition on the Sky History
Channel. Together with his father, he sailed from Newfoundland aboard a
Russian explorer ship.
Rob then went on a "trip of a lifetime" and spent twelve hours aboard a
small submersible, journeying two and half miles down to the seabed to the
wreck itself. (2½ hours there, 7 hours looking round and 2½ hours back)
The talk of his childhood interest turning into an adult hobby was
interesting and amusing, but the film he showed of the wreck and debris
field was stunning and extremely moving.
A night to remember

Tuesday 4th of April - impromptu quiz
George Dyer was going to speak on "The History of Brigg Town Football Club",
but due to circumstances beyond his control, he had to cancel the talk at
short notice. It was not possible to find a replacement speaker at such
short notice, so a fun quiz was held instead
This consisted of a nursery rhyme quiz, clues about street names of
Brigg, general knowledge questions and guessing household objects from their sound
Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening and the final winners were a team
consisting of Linda and Adrian Farrow and Jean Neal.

Lots of people found this talk fascinating and BASH even received
requests to have John come back in the near future to give another talk.
Maureen Settle was originally going to do her talk on the history of the
Brigg music and drama festival, but had to cancel due to unforeseeable
circumstances. Thanks to John for stepping in at short notice

Tuesday 1st of November 2005
"What's in a Name?; A History of Surnames" - a talk by Neil Wilkyn.
On Tuesday 1st November 2005, Neil Wilkyn came to talk about the history of surnames.
It was a very interesting talk and quite a lot of people attended. We learnt about
where surnames had originated from and how they could be used to track and trace people
down to their roots. He told us, and educated us on how surnames could be used to find
out the occupation of somebody generations ago. Lots of people had shown interest in the
talk, and found it fascinating. Once again, this was another successful meeting for BASH.

Tuesday 6th of September 2005
A talk with slides by Brian Peeps. "Sloops and Barges of the River Humber"
Our autumn season began on 6th September with a talk and slide show by Brian
Peeps on the Keels and Sloops of the River Humber. The slides included old and
modern pictures and gave an idea of what life was like living and working on
the boats and on the wharves. We now know the difference between a keel and a
sloop (it's all in the sails!). Brian provided an entertaining commentary
to the pictures and the audience of 60 or so thoroughly enjoyed it.
