Tuesday 3rd of April 2007 "The Pilgrim Fathers" - a talk by Sue Allan.
The April 3rd BASH meeting was Sue Allan, the author, who gave a talk on the Pilgrim
Fathers. She was accompanied by her co author and researcher, Roger Vorhauer,
who is here on a visit from his home in San Diego.
Both of them wore outfits from the period with Sue wearing the kind of
dress the women wore at the time of the voyage.
Sue outlined the story of the Puritans from our area and their religious
struggles and persecution. Eventually, unable to continue any more, they made
their way to Boston and despite spending time in Boston gaol they finally set
sail for Amsterdam.
They spent several years in Holland then left in 1620 to put into Plymouth,
England. They then set sail in the Mayflower and landed, not at their expected
destination, Virginia, but in Plymouth, New England. There was no support
system here and during the first winter at least half of them died from scurvy.
It was only the guidance of the native Americans, who taught them how to plant
Indian corn, which led to their survival.
After the talk Sue sold signed copies of her two books, The Mayflower Maid
and Jamestown Woman.

Tuesday 6th of March 2007 "Just Jane - two farmers and a Lancaster" -
a talk by Jenny Walton.
The March 6th BASH meeting was the first to be held at the Brigg & District
Servicemen’s Club and was a great success. The venue was ideal and the 125
people who attended were able to sit comfortably and hear the speaker, Jenny Walton,
clearly. Jenny is an experienced author and Journalist with a long-standing interest
in the RAF and particularly it’s role during World War II.
The story she told was one of survival, dedication and sheer determination.
She gave us background information on the Lancaster Bomber and it’s place in
the air offensives of World War II and how Just Jane was acquired by 2 Lincolnshire
farmers, Fred and Harold Panton. The 2 brothers have lovingly restored her to pristine
condition. They consider Just Jane to be a salute to the men and women of Bomber
Command, living and dead, who gave so much in the cause of freedom. One of those who
died was their brother, Chris.
The evening ended with Jenny signing copies of her book and the crowd enjoying
an excellent buffet supplied by the Vines Restaurant.
