Mon 8th Jun '09 - Pump Dressing

BASH again organised the dressing of the Brigg Pumps, which took place on Monday, 15th June:

The Grimsby Morris Men danced at the pump outside The White Horse and the curate, David Eames, blessed that pump. Everyone then made their way to the pump at the County Bridge. The pump had been cleaned and painted by Paul Buttler the landlord of the Nelthorpe Arms. More dancing by the Morris Men and again a blessing by David Eames. The pumps had been beautifully dressed by the ladies of Brigg Flower Club. The flowers were supplied by Shirley at Brigg Fruit Veg & Flowers. A supper was provided for the Morris Men the Brigg & District Servicemen's Club where they played and sang folk songs.

BASH are having a break in July & August but will be back in full flow on 1st September with an illustrated talk by Marilyn Roberts on The History of Anastasia.

Fri 8th May '09 - Salute to V.E. day.

VE Day was celebrated in style as BASH held their annual 40's Night Dance at the Brigg and District Servicemen's Club.

Paula Baldwin's Shiny Stockings Swing Band was a fabulous success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed listening to singers Sara Blair-Manning and Gary Grace and were mesmerised watching the four Jump Jive Alive dancers perform Swing Jive, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug and The Stroll.

Nearly everyone came in 40's attire and the Club was yet again suitably decorated with bunting and flags. The buffet was prepared by the BASH committee led by Jean Neall and included bread & dripping, spam sandwiches and Anzac biscuits. The lucky ticket winner, Byron Teague, was presented with a bottle of Champagne. The best-dressed lady was Sally Rogers, the Pearly Queen and the best-dressed man was "spiv" Phil Allen.

The bar staff were dressed in costume and were supervised by "Renee" ('Allo 'Allo!) alias Keith the steward.

Sadly, the flypast was cancelled, as the wind was too strong for the Hurricane & Spitfire to risk flying.

Tue 14th Apr '09 - Bash Exclusive - Operation Titanic

April 14th at the Brigg & District Servicemen's Club saw the most welcome return to BASH by Rob Goldsmith.

Rob had won a competition with the History Channel to go down in a submersible to the wreck of the Titanic. He had competed against 30,000 people but was lucky enough to be selected. His interest in the Titanic began when he was 5 years old and his enthusiasm for the subject must have helped him win.

He talked about his fascinating experience and showed footage of the film of his exploits. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his talk. His parents and Girlfriend, Liz, came with him and the family stayed overnight at Albert House, bed and breakfast, in Bigby Street.

Steve Mundey brought many bottles from his extensive collection to Brigg & District Servicemens' Club for the March 3rd BASH meeting.

Tue 3rd Feb '09 - The Lincolnshire Rising of 1536

On 3rd February Brigg Servicemens Club was the venue for Bill Brocklesby's talk on the "Lincolnshire Uprising of 1536" which happened in the reign of Henry VIII.

Bill gave a brief outline of life in the county to explain the causes of the uprising.

Henry increased taxes and when rumours raced around the area that he had increased them even more it caused dissent among the poor who were also fearful of their churches closing as the dissolution of the monasteries had happened and Henry was now head of the Church of England and the new religion was being imposed on everyone.

The uprising began at Louth and spread rapidly throughout the county.

On hearing of these events the King threatened to send an army, but eventually the uprising was dispersed and Henry did forgive some of them, but not the ringleaders who were executed.

Tue 2nd Dec '08 - The History Of Morris Dancing

On Tuesday 2nd December the Grimsby Morris Men came to the Brigg and District Servicemens Club to speak and perform at the BASH meeting.

They performed several dances and told us the history of Morris dancing and the regional variation of each dance they performed.

They also told us of the derivation of the plough plays and how they were put on each Christmas by the plough lads.

A plough play was then acted and had everyone in fits of laughter, especially when the man with full beard came on to the stage dressed as a woman and holding a baby. Their adlibbing and forgetting of lines made the play even funnier.
